Annual Law Enforcement Student Drill Notification Letter

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

In order to make students more aware of and prepared for different circumstances, school districts participate in many different drills throughout the school year.  Typically, these drills include fire, tornado, earthquake, and bus evacuation drills.  Unfortunately, due to many tragic incidents throughout the country and the world, we need to make our students aware of and prepared for the potentiality of an intruder or active shooter in a school.

In recent years, with assistance from the Amboy Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, we have conducted intruder/active shooter drills with teachers and other staff members.  In order to comply with the Illinois School Code, we have to conduct, with law enforcement present, an annual student-participated intruder/active shooter drill.

We believe in providing students and staff with options during the intruder/active shooter drill in these situations.  In order to do this, we began introducing staff to ALICE training many years ago and have been providing students with ALICE training as well.  ALICE stands for A – alert, L- lockdown, I-Inform, C-counter, and E-evacuate.  This philosophy allows students and staff multiple options to respond to a situation depending upon an intruder’s location within a building.  You can learn more about ALICE here: https://www.alicetraining.com/our-program/alice-training/k12-education/

We will conduct the drills with the Amboy Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department at all three buildings on September 9th.  This “drill” will introduce students to the ALICE concept and how to respond appropriately during an intruder/active shooter drill.

At Central, students will be reading Julia Cook’s book, I’m Not Scared . . . I’m Prepared Because I Know All About Alice. Students will also watch this short video: Rockets Rules for Safety (Click on the link to watch)

As always, continue to listen to your student’s concerns about school safety and reassure them that the school has procedures in place to help keep them safe.  Encourage your children to share concerns with you and any staff member so that we can continue providing a safe environment.  Do not hesitate to call your student’s building principal with questions or concerns.  Amboy Central Elementary School – Jessica Meusel -  (815) 857 – 3619, Amboy Junior High School – Andrew Full, (815) 857 – 3528, and Amboy High School – Janet Crownhart, (815) 857 – 3632.

Sincerely,

Joshua Nichols

Superintendent
